Shoe Lacing Tips

You may know how to tie your shoes or you may think you know how to tie your shoes. So if you have a narrow ankle or a wide forefoot or if your lace is coming undone here’s a couple of lacing techniques. If you have a narrow ankle use the last, eyelet pull the lace through and make a loop from each side and then criss-cross your laces into the loop that you’ve just created. What this does is then synch the heel and leave your forefoot nice and wide.

If you’re having issues with your laces coming undone, do your regular knot, take the right end of the lace do one more little loop so you have two knots. Go ahead and tie normally and your lace should stay done up.

If you have any issues with these knots come on in and let us show you how. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 for details.

Shoe Fit

We often struggle with figuring out what is our actual shoe size. Sometimes you can be a different size with different shoes within the same brand.

So when you are doing your shoe sizing please make sure that you are fully weight-bearing. You always want 3/8 to 5/8 of an inch from your longest toe to the end of the shoe. This gives a little bit of space for your foot to slide forward and gives way to any swelling.

When it comes to width, if there is any bulging on the outside of the shoe then maybe your shoe might be too narrow. Or if you see a bunching of the fabric then the shoe might be too wide for you. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 to get a proper sizing for your shoes.

Safety Shoes

Many people need safety shoes for their work. We see a lot of people who wear safety shoes all day long for either 8 to 12 hours.  Choose the right type of safety shoe for you.

When it comes to safety shoes there is everything from shoes or dressy types of shoes to athletic type of shoes and either 6-inch or 8-inch boots.

All safety shoes we sell have the green patch on them, the grade 1 CSA safety standard.

The best way to fit a safety shoe is to remove the liner because remember you can’t feel your toes because of the toe cap!

Remove the liner of the shoe and step on it and when you step on it make sure you have at least one thumb width at the end of the toes so that you can see that that’s a good fit for you.

We particularly like shoes like Royer because of the flex point. When you’re walking or standing all day long the flex point of the shoe makes it so much more comfortable if it bends a little.

Orthotics Don’t Fit Any of My Shoes

Quite often we get complaints from people who say the orthotics they got from somewhere else don’t fit into any of their shoes.

Well first thing to remember is that you got the orthotics because doctor said you needed them. So you have to be able to wear them.

Let’s talk about the different types of orthotics and why they may not fit into your shoes.

The main piece of an orthotic is the shell. This shell is the piece that goes from your heel to the end of the arch. This is the meat and potatoes of the orthotic.

We then put different layers of covering on top of the orthotic. You can have a full length cover or you can have a 3/4 length cover.  Orthotics can be made super thin like dress orthotics or they can be made quite thick like a sport orthotic.

Different Orthotics are made for different functions, so if you’re finding that you have trouble fitting the orthotic into your shoes let us know – there are many things we can do to help. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 for details.

How To Pick a Good Runner

It can be very overwhelming when trying to find a good runner. Here’s a few tips to get you started. First, you want to go to a trained professional who’s going to look at your foot, watch you walk and tell you what type of foot type you have and then recommended right shoe for you.

If you are a pronator or flat-footed you’re going to want a shoe with extra arch support and high density foam built into the middle of the arch that doesn’t allow the arch to collapse. If you are a supinator or someone that has a high arch you want a shoe that has cushioning throughout the shoe.

We also want to look at the heel counter and make sure it’s firm and supportive.  A good shoe will naturally bend at the forefoot at the toes and you should not be able to turn the shoe into a pretzel! Come on in to get the right shoe fitted for your foot type. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 for details.
