Kids

Pediatric Severs Disease

Although it sounds terrifying, Sever’s disease is a common injury that occurs in kids, especially adolescents who do running and jumping sports. Sever’s disease is the irritation of the calcaneal growth plate. Your child may experience heel pain or discomfort in the Achilles area.

Orthotics with a deep heel cup and cushioning can decrease discomfort. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 to book your appointment today if your child is complaining of this type of pain.

Pediatric Knock Knees

If you notice when your child is standing that their knees touch but their ankles don’t, your child may have knock knees. 99% of the time kids under the age of four will actually have their knees straighten out by the time they’re about seven or eight.

If not and it persists into adolescence or develops later in life there may be more serious underlying causes.

Custom orthotics could benefit you if you have knock knees through adolescence or adulthood by realigning your feet and therefore realigning the knees further up the chain.

Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 to discuss treatment options for treating knock knees in your child.

Does your child in toe?

Intoeing or pigeon toed is when you notice that your child’s toes face inwards. Sometimes it can be a problem especially if when they’re trying to run they trip over themselves and they can’t be active. If that’s the case you really should get that looked at.

The research on intoeing is really scattered. Some people will tell you it will correct itself and others say it may not.

If you find that intoeing is causing a decrease in activity level then come on in and let us figure it out.

There are things that we can do for intoeing. There are  orthotics that are created specifically to make the toes move outwards. Be careful when you have these in the shoe. You’re not going to see a perfect straightening of the foot, you’re going to maybe see a couple of degrees, but sometimes that’s enough to make sure your child is able to be active and grow and fundamentally develop in the right plane.

If you have any questions about intoeing come on in and talk to us and we’d be happy to help. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 for details.

Pediatric Toe Walking

Toe walking is very common in children from one years old to three years old. After 3 years old if your child is still toe walking it is typically due to a tight Achilles tendon or limited flexion at the ankle.

Posterior calf muscle exercises can help, however a custom fit orthotic with a rigid heel counter and a built-in heel lift can definitely help to allow a heel to ground contact thereby allowing a heel to toe gait.

If you notice that your child is a toe walker please feel free to give us a call and we’ll be happy to assist them for you. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 for details.

Pediatric Hip Dysplasia

Pediatric hip dysplasia is the muscular or structural dislocation of the hip in the infant from the socket.

Signs and symptoms to watch out for are:

  • increases in the gluteal fold between thigh and buttocks;
  • stumbling or waddling gait; and
  • reduced flexibility during diapering.

An orthotic with a deep heel cup and lateral forefoot extension can help externally rotate the leg thereby placing the hip into a more stable position and thereby providing a more stable gait.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your child we would be more than happy to take a look for you and provide a consultation and assessment. Call Burlington Orthotic Centre today at 905-331-4391 for details.
